Overview of the use of Genkai

  1. Preparation for Use

  2. To start using Genkai, you need to create following two accounts.
    • Genkai Portal Account
User account for Application Portal, where you can apply for using supercomputers, add computing resources, and add project participants. Only one Genkai Portal Account is issued per person. You need to create it first. Refer here for the procedure to create it.
    • Supercomputer Account
User account for logging in to the supercomputer Genkai. A supercomputer account is created for each participant of a project. A project is supposed to be created for each user group, such as a research group that use the computer with the same budget. A project can be created by the group leader, then other participants can join the project. Since one person can participate multiple projects, one person can have multiple supercomputer accounts.

After creating a Genkai Portal Account, you can create a Supercomputer Account with the following procedure.
    1. The group leader logs in to Application Portal and apply for a project.
Refer here for the project application.
    2. Once the project is approved, the group leader sends the issued project ID to the project participants.
    3. Each of the group participants logs in to Application Portal and apply for participation with the project ID.
Refer here for the project participation.
    4. The group leader logs in to Application Portal to approve the participation. Refer here for approving the project application.
    5. After approval, a supercomputer account of the project will be notified to each of the participant via email

Followings are the notes for issuing projects and accounts.
    • One person can apply for multiple projects for multiple research groups.
    • One user can participate in several different projects.
    • A different supercomputer account will be issued for each participating project, even for the same portal account.
    • A basic monthly fee of 130 yen per project will be charged to the project leader.

For accounting reasons, projects that use only the month of March as the period of use cannot be applied for.

  3. Points purchase

  4. In order to use the shared use node in a project, you need to purchase points in advance.
Purchased points are shared by all project participants.
Points can be purchased at the time of project application or added during the usage period.
Following are the notes about points.
    • Points are valid for 6 months from the date of grant and expire after the expiration date.
    • Points cannot be carried over from one fiscal year to the next.
    • Unused points cannot be refunded.
    • The total amount of points to be sold by R.I.I.T is calculated based on the total system computing time. If the maximum amount is exceeded, point sales will be terminated even in the middle of the fiscal year.
    • During the peak season (October through January), usage of the system is extremely crowded and points may not be fully consumed.
    Refer here for purchasing points.

For accounting reasons, it is not possible to apply to purchase points in March.

  5. Basic Usage Fee and Storage

  6. Each project is entitled to 1 TB of Large Storage for the duration of the subscription period for the basic usage fee.
In addition, you can add capacity for Large Storage or Fast Storage at the time of project application, or you can purchase additional capacity during the usage period.
Please do not forget to add the usage period or apply for continuation for the following year, as access to the storage will be disabled when the usage period ends.
